Practical Grazing Strategies for Kansas Producers

Research-based guidance to support productive pastures and profitable operations.

A collaborative educational project from the Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition and the National Grazing Lands Coalition, designed to help producers improve forage utilization, soil health, and cattle performance through sound grazing management practices.

Kansas Grazing Management Video Series

Healthy Soils. Better Forage. Smarter Grazing.

The Kansas Grazing Management Video Series brings together research-based recommendations and practical field experience to help producers make informed grazing management decisions. Through a partnership between the Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition (KGLC) and the National Grazing Lands Coalition (NatGLC), this series covers key topics that influence forage production, pasture performance, and cattle productivity across Kansas.

About The Project

Effective grazing management plays a critical role in the success of livestock operations across Kansas. From maintaining productive forage stands to managing soil fertility and matching livestock needs with available forage resources, producers face a variety of management decisions throughout the year.

To help address these challenges, the Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition partnered with the National Grazing Lands Coalition to develop this educational video series. The project was created to provide practical, research-based information that producers can apply directly to their operations.

Whether you are a cow-calf producer, stocker operator, landowner, grazing manager, extension professional, or agricultural consultant, these resources are designed to support better grazing decisions and long-term pasture productivity.

Kansas producers face a variety of challenges related to forage production, cattle nutrition, pasture management, and input costs. This video series provides practical recommendations for managing tall fescue and bermudagrass systems, improving forage utilization, reducing feeding costs, and supporting long-term pasture productivity.

Learn why soil testing and proper pH management are critical for forage production, pasture productivity, and successful legume establishment.

Key Grazing Management Principles

The concepts discussed throughout this series share several common themes that can help improve grazing outcomes across Kansas:

• Regular soil testing provides the foundation for informed fertility decisions.
• Maintaining proper soil pH supports forage productivity and legume establishment.
• Matching stocking rates to forage availability improves pasture utilization.
• Understanding seasonal forage growth patterns helps optimize grazing management.
• Strategic mineral supplementation supports animal health and performance.
• Effective grazing management can reduce feed costs and extend the grazing season.
• Long-term pasture productivity depends on balancing soil health, forage management, and livestock needs.

Project Partnership
