There are many factors to take into account when prescribing a burn plan. The goal of this video series is to provide applicable resources that are helpful to utilize when considering prescribed burning.
What is Prescribed Burning?
Prescribed fire is a safe way to apply a natural process, ensure ecosystem health, and reduce wildfire risk. Prescribed burning is carried out by experienced, trained, and certified land managers on both public and private lands throughout Kansas.
Some benefits include:
- Maintaining healthy prairies
- Controlling certain invasive woody species (ERC in my area) and other invaders
- Maintaining quality wildlife habitat of both game and nongame species
- Improving grass and forb stands and aesthetics
- Fire can help control diseases
- Effectively managing fuels in the wild land/urban interface,
- Perpetuating fire dependent ecosystems and associated species, and
- Providing for responsible smoke management for safety, health, and air quality concerns
Video Series
Let's start with "How to Assess Your Prescribed Burn Location." In this video, David Kraft explains how important is to use the weather conditions, wind conditions, wind speed and humidity to get the smoke from the fire up into the air for the safety of those applying the fire, residents and the general public who are nearby in the community. The fire retardant material, typically around the bottom of power poles, can degrade over time and become ineffective. Even if the material is still in good condition, it is fire retardant—not fool-proof.
