Prescribed Burning Video Series

There are many factors to take into account when prescribing a burn plan. The goal of this video series is to provide applicable resources that are helpful to utilize when considering prescribed burning.

What is Prescribed Burning?

Prescribed fire is a safe way to apply a natural process, ensure ecosystem health, and reduce wildfire risk. Prescribed burning is carried out by experienced, trained, and certified land managers on both public and private lands throughout Kansas.

Some benefits include:

  • Maintaining healthy prairies
  • Controlling certain invasive woody species (ERC in my area) and other invaders
  • Maintaining quality wildlife habitat of both game and nongame species
  • Improving grass and forb stands and aesthetics
  • Fire can help control diseases
  • Effectively managing fuels in the wild land/urban interface,
  • Perpetuating fire dependent ecosystems and associated species, and
  • Providing for responsible smoke management for safety, health, and air quality concerns

Video Series

Let's start with "How to Assess Your Prescribed Burn Location." In this video, David Kraft explains how important is to use the weather conditions, wind conditions, wind speed and humidity to get the smoke from the fire up into the air for the safety of those applying the fire, residents and the general public who are nearby in the community. Learn about the affects of wind breaks while burning, and watch the fire boss make live-time adjustments based on the wind break. David touches on the benefits and downfalls of Eastern Red Cedars and discusses the affect fire can have on this species. David discusses echniques to keep the prescribed fire away from important structures, such as power poles and power lines, that may be found on rangeland in Kansas. Dive deeper into these topics by watching the video below!

Each member of a fire crew should be knowledgable about "How to Follow a Burn Plan."  In the video below, David Kraft explains what a burn plan is, what preparations may be needed, and considerations that need to be included (smoke management, humidity, wind speed and direction, fuel type).

In the third video of the Prescribed Burning Video Series, David Kraft walks through the safety procedures and methods that a "fire boss" and crew utilize to maintain safety for everyone involved in a prescribed burn.

In this video, learn from Evergy about preparing for prescribed burns near power poles and related structures.

The fire retardant material, typically around the bottom of power poles, can degrade over time and become ineffective. Even if the material is still in good condition, it is fire retardant—not fool-proof. Nick notes that it is important to check any large cracks in the power pole to ensure that embers do not ignite within.

Do you have questions or concerns about power structures in regards to prescribed burning?  In the video below, Evergy answers some of the most asked questions about burning around power structures.

Evergy covers the following topics in this video:

  • Fire Hazards on Power Pole
  • Smoke Around Power Poles
