Prescribed Fire: Part of the Climate Solution, Not the Problem

Each year, when smoke rises over the Kansas prairie, some people ask the same question: How can burning the land be good for the environment?

It is a fair question, especially in a time when climate change, air quality, and carbon emissions are on everyone’s mind. But the answer is clear. Prescribed fire is a science-based tool that supports the long-term health of grasslands, livestock production, and even the climate.

Let’s look at why prescribed fire is not only safe when used properly, but also essential to the sustainability of Kansas grazing lands.

Wildfire vs. Prescribed Fire

Not all fires are the same.

Wildfires are uncontrolled. They often burn at high intensity, consume large amounts of biomass, and release significant levels of carbon dioxide and particulates. They also damage root systems and soil health, which reduces a prairie’s ability to recover and store carbon after the burn.

Prescribed fires, on the other hand, are planned and controlled. They:

  • Burn under specific weather conditions

  • Target fine fuels like old grass litter

  • Protect root systems and allow for rapid plant regrowth

  • Reduce fuel loads that feed dangerous wildfires

Research from Kansas State University and other land-grant institutions shows that prescribed fire emits around 0.25 metric tons of carbon dioxide per acre, while a wildfire can emit up to 1 metric ton per acre, depending on conditions.

Grasslands and Carbon Sequestration

Grasslands are one of the most efficient ecosystems for storing carbon in the soil. Deep-rooted native grasses such as big bluestem and switchgrass pull carbon from the atmosphere during the growing season and store it underground.

Prescribed fire plays a key role in this process by:

  • Removing dead plant material that blocks sunlight and limits regrowth

  • Encouraging vigorous new growth of native species

  • Maintaining plant diversity, which supports long-term soil health

Although prescribed fire releases carbon temporarily, the regrowth that follows quickly reabsorbs it. Over time, fire-managed grasslands actually store more carbon than those that are never burned.

Fire as a Defense Against Woody Encroachment

One of the biggest threats to Kansas rangelands is woody plant encroachment, especially from eastern redcedar. Without fire, redcedar spreads quickly and transforms open prairie into dense, unproductive stands.

These trees:

  • Outcompete grasses for sunlight, water, and nutrients

  • Increase the risk of extreme wildfire by building up fuel loads

  • Reduce biodiversity and limit grazing potential

  • Lower the land’s ability to store carbon in deep soil layers

Prescribed fire is the most effective way to stop the spread of redcedar and restore the ecological balance of grasslands.

Fire and Fossil Fuels: A Comparison

It is common to see smoke during burn season and assume that prescribed fire is a major source of air pollution. But when you compare it to other sources of carbon emissions, the numbers tell a different story.

  • A diesel semi-truck can emit more than 5 metric tons of carbon dioxide per month

  • A passenger vehicle emits around 4.6 metric tons per year

  • An acre of prescribed fire emits about 0.25 metric tons, much of which is reabsorbed through regrowth

Prescribed fire produces visible smoke for a short time, but its carbon impact is small and temporary. In contrast, fossil fuel emissions are constant and long lasting.

Fire Is a Tool, Not a Threat

Prescribed fire is backed by decades of ecological research and supported by land managers, scientists, and ranchers across Kansas. It is not a problem for the environment. It is part of the solution.

Prescribed fire:

  • Increases forage quality and animal performance

  • Maintains native plant communities

  • Controls invasive trees and brush

  • Supports soil health and long-term carbon storage

When used responsibly, fire is one of the best tools we have for keeping grasslands healthy, productive, and climate-resilient.
