Kansas Ranching: Aldo Leopold and the Wolf by Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition & USDA NRCS
Kansas rancher, Bill Sproul talks about management ethics in relation to predators faced in ranching.
Listen to Bill as he elaborates on a story about Aldo Leopold's encounter with a wolf pack while hunting for elk.
After eliminating a wolf that was attacking the elk he sought out, Aldo Leopold realized that he negatively intervened in the natural predator-prey relationship between the wolves and elk. Bill explains that he revisits this story when faced with similar dilemmas in ranching, which helps remind him of the natural balance in the ecosystem. He notes that, as a rancher, one should always challenge themselves to understand and brainstorm ways for how to ranch with predators without altering that balance.
